Applied Instrumental Music
Columbia City High School
Spring Trimester 2008-2009
Eric Criss

Mission:

To further the study and performance of instrumental music.

Objectives:

• Improve performance skill on (1) instrument
• Perform for classmates
• Learn about the music industry, history and/or theory

Description:

Students will receive individual coaching on their instrument. Instruments can range from band instruments to guitar to piano. The class is not equiped for drums. This is open to any student for nearly any instrument at any level of proficiency who wants to improve on their instrument. Students must provide their own instrument. Current band students may use their band instrument issued to them. There will be special circumstances for piano.

Assessment:

Assessment practices may include traditional paper/pencil, performance and authentic assessment. Traditional assessment may include music vocab quizzes, article reading and other paper/pencil quizzes. Authentic assessment includes playing quizzes.

Classroom Rules:

  1. Be on time (attendance and assignments)
  2. Cell phones = no
  3. MP3 players = no
  4. Bring all your materials to class (for example, paper, pencil, class worksheets, tabs, music, reading guides)
  5. Because everyone is working independently, there will be no guitar amps of any kind. Accoustic (including wind) instruments will be separated from each other as much as possible to help foster a learning environment. Students are expected to be curtious in terms of practice space, time and volume
  6. Replace chairs/stands in their proper location/position every day
  7. The room is not equiped to store your instrument throughout the day nor overnight. Guitars will not fit in the instrument lockers. Do not leave your instrument in the auditorium. Do not leave your instrument in the music hall. Band and choir both roll large heavy equipment through the hall. Consider carrying you instrument with you. Some guitars have been known to fit in the hallway lockers. Consider asking your club sponsor or coach. ...these are just ideas.
  8. You will need your agenda to use the RR (school rule)

This is a plan and is subject to change. Listen for in class announcements.
