Mission:

The Columbia City High School Band will produce excellent performers through hard work, dedication, teamwork, and steady improvement.

Objectives:

• To produce high quality musical performances
• To develop the personal and group character traits of leadership, dignity, dependability and teamwork
• To serve and represent the school and community in public concerts, parades, competitions and other functions with excellence as our goal

Benchmarks:

• Improve EVERY week

• Group II Gold Rating

• Gold Rating in Sight Reading

• Perfect rating from one evaluator

Description:

The band will perform at marching band contests, parades, football games and community events. A required Band Camp takes place during the summer. Out-of-school-time rehearsals are required. Every effort is made to work with other organizations and teams. The concert portion of band performs a variety of challenging music. Performances include concerts, contests, solo & ensemble, basketball games and community events. Please refer to the current band handbook for further details, including supply fees.

Assessment:

Assessment practices will include traditional paper/pencil, performance and authentic assessment. Traditional assessment may include music vocab quizzes and other paper/pencil quizzes. Performance assessment includes all playing quizzes. Authentic assessment includes playing quizzes and concerts. Students are granted (2) re-takes that may be used on any playing quiz prior to the re-take deadline.

Classroom Rules:

  1. Be on time (attendance and assignments)
  2. Cell phones off during all rehearsals
  3. Bring all your materials to class
    1. Music
    2. Pencil (no pens)
    3. "Can do" attitude
  4. Leave "good enough" at the door. Our music performance will never stop evolving and improving. It is never complete.
  5. Listen carefully. Even if another section is being addressed many things will overlap into your area.
  6. Replace chairs/stands in proper location or as requested.
  7. Keep your inbox clear. (You don't leave your mail in your mailbox at home do you?)
  8. Use restroom at appropriate times.
  9. Have transportation arrangements ready. The band room must be cleared after every rehearsal/event/activity.
  10. Do the right thing.
